A letter from the President

April 5, 2019

Members of the Ohio Small Police Department Association,

Greetings! Welcome to Spring! As your Board President I wanted to reach out and let you in on the ongoing updates and events that are progressing behind the scenes. There are lots of moving parts to an Association. Between the committees, the Health Insurance Task Force, new membership enrollment, conferences, meetings and events… we are staying very busy!

Here are some updates. The Ohio Crime Prevention Association wants to partner with us to create a regional training network about crime issues that departments are having a hard time battling. Homes for Heroes wants to partner with us to provide discounts on closing costs/realtor costs for members. New York Life Insurance wants to become a vendor.

Virtual Academy wants to sponsor an evening reception at the conference. They are providing all the marketing materials and funds to go toward conference expenses. We are sincerely grateful for all the assistance and kindness that they have provided to us as we get up and rolling.

Challenge coins and squishy quotes are being generated. An OSPDA tab quote received as well.

Course instructors have been planned to teach Below 100,  Human Trafficking in Rural Areas and Dying in Blue at the annual conference.

Libra Forensics have offered Association members a discounted rate on the Basic Crime Scene Processing Course offered at a discounted rate of $215 versus $495 for the weeklong training. The link for registration is available on the website as well as the Facebook page.

Region 3 has a Chaplain that has asked to be involved with our Association.

The Virtual Academy platform is up and running. Some are even already enrolled in classes. If you’d like to join the platform and need a login, contact the Executive Director, Katherine Bobick at KBobick@OSPDA.org.

AFLAC met with us and created a discount network for our Association. Liberty Mutual also has a discounted insurance program for Association members.

Merchandise is ready to be sold. Hats are $15.00, t-shirts are $15.00, and polos are $20.00. Ordering will be available through our website; Facebook and Katherine can take orders by email as well at KBobick@ospda.org. Payment will be accepted through our PayPal account.

Annual Conference

A Poll was completed, and it was voted on to go to Salt Fork for the annual conference. The dates are August 22 (evening) – 25 (morning) (Thurs-Sunday morning). No state sales tax will be charged on food or room sales. A Chinese auction will be held with results announced at 2nd bonfire (Saturday) Already have donations coming in. If you know a company that would like to donate, please have them get in touch with us.  We will be collecting conference fees/room costs up front so that we do not have to pay sales tax.

Sponsorships at 4 levels will pay for conference room fees. There are many companies that have already expressed interest.

Swap Meet

We are hosting a swap Meet on September 14 at the Pickaway County Fairgrounds. The swap meet is open to the public. Vendors will be set up and food trucks will be available. The Pickaway County Fairgrounds have brand new buildings and are providing the grounds to us at a discounted rate because we are a non-profit. Tables and chairs will be provided at no additional cost. There will be a 5.00 entrance fee, and no setup fee for vendors.

On the grant landscape, a Wal-Mart application in for $5,000 grant. A large grant for Chief’s Mentoring Network coming due in May (Mental Health grant).

Grant Registrations are complete. To apply for Federal and State grants there are multiple systems that require registration. That process is finished, and we are ready to apply.

Regional Meetings

The regional meetings are rolling out. April 12 is Bluffton’s Meeting in Region 1. Region 2’s meeting is scheduled for May. Milan has graciously offered to host in May. A date will be announced very soon.
